pitchfork end of decade hullaballoo

this is the first end-of-decade extravaganza in which i can [indirectly] participate! in ‘89 i was still hooked on raffi and was too obsessed with cultivating my burgeoning self-importance in ‘99. however, here in ‘09, i’ve been eyeballing and obsessin’ ‘bout contemporary music for a good six or seven years and i have a reasonable grasp on quality control and what’s a’ gonna last and stand the tests of time and revisionism. and i always get excited about pitchfork lists, whatever, you uptight, constricted, puckered cooler-than-thou anti-scene scensters.

no commentary for 500-201. LAME.

200-51 has been pretty solid. only five or so songs i HATE. “party hard?” why is that scum-sucking, bottom-feeding troglodyte dunderhead andrew wk anywhere near this list? and coldplay can keep their meandering, all-encompassing, middle of the interstate castrato balladry away from my [undeserved] sense of credibility. “do you realize?” is half-baked, undercooked philosphic acid ramblings striving too hard for depth and profundity and “1234” is boring mom-rock, sorry. and “yeah” is gratingingly annoying. aside from those five [no cash for] clunkers, the tracks range from “solid” 6.5/10s [the funeral, trains to brazil, say my name] to “among my favorite songs EVER, fuckface” 10/10s [so weit wie noch nie, if i ever feel better, distortions].

and to further add to the length of an already overly-long TUMBLR UPDATE, my predicts for top 50, in rough chronological order:

- svegn-g-englar - sigur ros [technically ‘99, but it was on their 2000-04 list]
- since i left you - the avalanches
- frontier psychiatrist - the avalanches [maybe. on their 2000-04 list]
- one more time - daft punk
- digital love - daft punk [top ten]
- idioteque - radiohead [top ten]
- something else from kid a - radiohead [probably “everything in its right place”]
- stan - eminem [or has he lost his CRED, man?]
- b.o.b. - outkast [top ten, maybe #1]
- last night - the strokes [or will “someday” be the highest ranking?]
- can’t get you out of my head - kylie minogue
- romeo - basement jaxx
- get ur freak on - missy elliott
- losing my edge - lcd soundsystem
- grindin’ - clipse [or maybe “mr. me too”]
- the way we get by - spoon [or maybe “you got yr cherry bomb”]
- staring at the sun - tv on the radio [not so sure about this, but they gotta have something in the top 50]
- crazy in love - beyonce
- ignition (remix) - r. kelly
- hey ya! - outkast [top ten, maybe #1]
- house of jealous lovers - the rapture [top ten]
- 99 problems - jay-z
- the rat - the walkmen
- maps - yeah yeah yeahs [top ten]
- heartbeat - annie
- float on - modest mouse
- take me out - franz ferdinand
- galang - m.i.a.
- heartbeats - the knife
- yeah (crass version) - lcd soundsystem [i love lcd, but 4 in the top 50 seems unlikely, still this was top 20 on the 2000-04 list]
- 1 thing - amerie [not sure about this one]
- hope there’s someone - antony & the johnsons
- chicago - sufjan stevens [seems the most likely choice off illinoise]
- since u been gone - kelly clarkson [top ten]
- boy from school - hot chip
- emily - joanna newsom [or something from ys]
- my love - justin timberlake [top ten]
- what you know - t.i.
- archangel - burial [longshot]
- someone great - lcd soundsystem
- all my friends - lcd soundsystem [top ten, maybe/should be #1]
- atlas - battles [top ten]
- paper planes - m.i.a.
- bros - panda bear
- fireworks - animal collective
- umbrella - rihanna
- int’l player’s anthem - ugk
- machine gun - portishead
- blind - hercules & love affair
- my girls - animal collective

i bet i get at least 35/50. and it’s definitely outkast vs. lcd soundsystem for the number one slot.

this is surprisingly cute. and completely apt for our generation; probably 75% of the crushes/relationships i’ve experienced have been mediated through some manifestation of online social networking - AIM, livejournal, myspace, facebook, et cetera. my first girlfriend in middle school knew me primarily through AIM chats; my first (read: ONLY) girlfriend in high school developed a crush on my livejournal persona; my first girlfriend in college met me through myspace and facebook. this is probably more a reflection of my poor social skills, but still, it’s pretty fascinating.

reveller:

I saw this on Today’s Big Thing and was super prepared to hate it. Too bad I was surprised by the sweetest thing Ever.

cult film: a critical symposium

[via cineaste magazine]

this is a collection of varying definitions of “cult film” proposed by prominent film critics and scholars. david church - a PhD student in CMCL - provides the most compelling response. he nearly implies that viral videos display “paracinematic” qualities, bolstering an argument i made in a paper - the phenomenon of viewing “viral videos” on the internet is ostensibly similar to behavior associated with cult films. church also uses the adjective “lumpen” to describe the lower-middle class. MAJOR POINTS!

4chan, trolling, and crazy hyper post-modernity

this is an old-ish article, but it hints on what i was arguing in an earlier post. “trolling”/4chan stuff is the closest approximation of a counterculture that has manifested in hyper technologized western society and it only exists on the internetz. HOW PO-MO! i’ve always been fascinated by the bizarre, contradictory morality and the near-nihilsitc flippant dismissal of damn near everything. like any historical counterculture, it has its own slang and code of ethics. it’s also infiltrated the mainstream via lolcats and other popularized memes. i lost my ipod…maybe it’s time to become an hero?

The Death of Postmodernism and Beyond

i dunno, dude, i think what we’re currently experiencing is the progression and intensification of already inherent aspects of post-modernity.
