hipsterdom is great and all, but it’s sort of a retrogressive synthesis of a multitude of subcultures that came before. it’s unabashedly classist and disappointingly sterile. the fetishization of “the image” is kind of interesting, but, you know, it’s been done before. i would have hated to admit it a few years ago, but i really think this is the quintessential subculture of our generation. it’s definitely a more accurate reflection of hyper post-modernity. obviously this one site isn’t an all-encompassing encapsulation of “internet subculture,” but still, it’s pretty goddamn fascinating. think of people like megan hoolehan or dustin’s megaman ex-roommate. is there a historical precedent for these types of people? consider the hikikomori phenomenon in japan. what the fuck? hyper post-modernity! i mean, yeah, emily dickinson, but these people aren’t writing poetry, they’re drawing pictures of sonic the hedgehog assraping disney’s robin hood. it’s post-morality. just look at the bizarre, contradictory entries on racism, violence, sex, etc. post-post-post-post.
damn. i should get back to reading peer gynt.
